If you love all things health and wellness like we do, your social media feed is probably chock full of fitness models showing you their favorite workout move or the newest açai bowl on the market. There’s image after image of post-workout sweaty selfies, encouraging messaging reminding you to “Never give up!” and “Hustle and heart will set you apart!” We love all the positivity and pro-wellness that’s being put out in the world (Hello, it’s a huge reason Brave Body Project exists in the first place) but recently we’re feeling a little burnt out by it.
In a recent article for The Huffington Post, Jaime Varon hits the nail on the head. She writes:
“You don’t need more motivation or inspiration to create the life you want. You need less shame around the idea that you’re not doing your best. You need to stop listening to people who are in vastly different life circumstances and life stages than you tell you that you’re just not doing or being enough. You need to let timing do what it needs to do. You need to see lessons where you see barriers. You need to understand that what’s right now becomes inspiration later. You need to see that wherever you are now is what becomes your identity later.”
Similarly, Jesse Israel wrote an article for Well + Good opening up about being “overwhelmed by the volume—and intensity—of hear-me-roar feel-good messages.” He writes:
“On a particularly low day, I was at a gift shop and noticed a Hallmark card glaring at me. In a bold graphic the front of the card stated (demanded?): “Be in love with your life. Every minute of it.”
I wanted to burn it.”
We’re happy to hear other leaders in the fitness and health world speak out about this suddenly oversaturated market of be-happy-eat-kale-don’t-stop-achieve-your-dreams world. And while we want you to eat, look and feel the best you can, we also want you to know that’s its ok to stop, breathe and simply be wherever you are in your life right now. Because being wherever you are right now, whether it’s 5lbs overweight, unmotivated, stressed, sad, unsure of where you’re going in life – that’s exactly where you’re supposed to be. And just like being happy, feeling super fit, feeling inspired – it all comes and goes as it should. We are not robots. We cannot operate at 100% all of the time.
We hope you have a great week. We hope that you will give yourself permission to be wherever you are in life right now. And most importantly, we hope that you will be brave in doing so.
