This month on the BBP blog we’re excited to feature 4 women who are truly making a positive impact in their industries and represent the 4 tiers of our site: braveBODY, braveEATS, braveLOOKS and braveWORDS.
This week, we’re all about loving the skin you’re in. That’s why it was a no-brainer that we introduce you to the lovely ladies of Smith + Brit.
Smith & Brit is a beauty and wellness destination where the collective experience, knowledge, and passion of its founders is used to help clients look and feel their best. Founders Kristyn Smith, Claire Beevers, and Ali Hynes are unique in that all three of them are beauty therapists (with over forty years of combined experience) that have worked on countless faces and bodies internationally. Smith & Brit offer a carefully edited selection of products for lifestyle and beauty, expert advice, and treatments such as bespoke facials and reflexology for a complete holistic experience.
We sat down with the ladies of Smith + Brit and asked them a few questions.
BBP: Tell us a little bit about yourselves.
Smith + Brit: The three of us met at work here in NYC just over two years ago and instantly hit it off. We kept in touch and things just aligned in many ways so we decided to venture out by ourselves and create Smith & Brit Boutique and Spa. We have each had long careers in the health and beauty industry: Claire traveling the world working as a beauty therapist then moving in to managerial roles for luxury brands in London and New York; Kristyn as an medical esthetician in California (Beverly Hills, San Francisco, and Sonoma County) working for some of the most respected dermatologists and plastic surgeons in that area; and Ali as Head Reflexologist at the renowned Margaret Dabbs clinics in London.
We are exceptionally passionate about all aspects of health and beauty and about the people we are fortunate enough to encounter working in this industry. Our clients and the brand founders that we work with constantly inspire us – and we wanted to create a space where we could share these incredible brands, our treatments and our experience in a warm and friendly environment. There is so much information and so many different products and treatments out there that the health and beauty world can become a bit overwhelming – in light of this, one of our goals is to provide a fun and educational experience for our clients. We love that our clients trust us to give them honest advice.
As people, Kristyn loves good coffee and the great outdoors, Claire adores make-up and her two Shih Tzu’s and Ali is addicted to Barre and Hu Kitchen. All three of us must eat some form of chocolate everyday
BBP: What does living a brave life mean to you?
Smith + Brit:
Claire: Having the courage to drive yourself forward and overcome your fears even when the odds are stacked against you
Ali: Trusting your gut even if at the time what your doing might seem like a risk- I think if you are living authentically then everything will turn out the way it is supposed to. Also, understanding that we learn our most important lessons and grow most as people when we are faced with challenges and struggles so we should try and embrace these moments as much as we do the good times!
Kristyn: Facing those things that we fear most (and allowing them to shape us) – Throughout my life and career I have strived to not only challenge myself by embracing the things that I fear, but have also sought to encourage others to do the same. In the world of beauty we are often defined by what others think and say, and this tends to create fear and insecurities within us which force us to look for affirmation. This quest for approval generally spirals into an endless and unhealthy cycle until we finally face who we are and realize there is purpose in all that we are including our looks, personality and even the life (opportunities) we have or haven’t been given. Once this is understood, we can then realize it’s all of the above that makes us who and what we are – we can take what we’ve been given and use these unique gifts to give this life our the best we have to offer as we strive to never forget that we are all beautiful if we live beautifully!
BBP: What was one moment you chose courage over fear in your career?
Smith + Brit:
Claire: I have worked with and known so many courageous people. I have also taken risks, but what stands out to me is the women I worked with when I volunteered as an ambassador for Look Good Feel Better for women fighting cancer. I was there to share my beauty knowledge but in return I gained so much from spending time with them and was truly moved by their bravery- a humbling experience.
Ali: Probably deciding to start our own business. We know it’s a risk and a big commitment with plenty of sleepless nights, highs and lows but I completely trust Kristyn and Claire as business partners and as friends and they give me a lot of courage to move forward and believe in my own potential.
Kristyn: I would say my thoughts on “courage over fear” are in part similar to Ali’s experience. I feel that a steady income and a defined role in a company are much more comforting then stepping out into the unknown as we’ve done with Smith and Brit. Doing what you’re passionate about is rarely easy but always worth it in the end
BBP: Tell our readers your best tips for quick and easy skincare post sweat session.
Ali: One reason why I love working out is because of the amazing effects it has on the skin! When you get the blood pumping and boost the circulation it gives an incredible glow. Stress affects the skin in so many negative ways and exercise is great to combat that too. I would say drink plenty of water and treat yourself to a bath with some soothing salts. We have these amazing ones from English brand Haeckels which are made with seaweed extract, arnica, sea buckthorn oil, rosemary and sage- Anti-inflammatory and amazing for relaxing the muscles and any other aches and pains.
Claire: After your post-workout shower is a great time to apply any specialized body treatment products. We all love Body Makeover-Skin Firming Body Gel from Cloud 9 Skin Solutions which is amazing for reducing the appearance of cellulite and firming the skin with ingredients like Horse Chestnut, Gotu Kola and Vitamin E. It really works- it’s so active you can actually feel it tingle on application!
Kristyn: For clear, healthy and hydrated skin- Use a light and preferably gentle cleanser (cream/oil) and cleanse your face right after working out – this will remove not only the perspiration (which is the bodies way of purging, so if the body doesn’t want it, it shouldn’t sit on your skin) but also any surface residue from the gym as well. Be sure to cleanse up to your hairline and keep an eye out for any residual makeup (since no one should work out in face makeup). Next, apply a light moisturizer ASAP to rehydrate the skin – another option would be using a really great toner/mist. I personally love a California-based line we carry called Kaplan MD -it’s a clarifying toner with salicylic acid and is an ideal post-workout choice because you can not only mist the face, but the body as well! The salicylic acid will fight any surface bacteria which means fewer breakouts on the face, chest and back 😉 – this unique toner is also hydrating so it’s truly the perfect post workout product!
